We couldn’t agree more that magazines are girl’s all time fashion bible. In Japan, magazine functions as a very powerful and influential media in the fashion world. If you ever own one of the fashion magazine of Japan, you definitely will be fascinated by how the Japanese expresses fashion in their way!

I compared a some magazines bought in Japan (Vivi & Jelly) and a magazine named Female which I bought in Malaysia.

#1 Massive Volume of Contents

These are the contents of ViVi December 2014. Comprehensive isn’t it ? The pages are filled with different kinds of styling and mix and match techniques. You hardly see any empty spaces in the Japanese magazines. One magazine probably has sufficient amount of fashion information for the whole season.

On the other hand, mainstream (the western kind of magazines) are more clean and compact. For example, look at this styling tips in Female, Malaysia January 2015. The features and design are more clean, simple and emphasizes the “high fashion” atmosphere.

#2 The Comic Oriented Layout

There is also an obvious difference between the layout and design of the articles. Japanese magazines usually add lots of comic-oriented design in their magazines, such as scribbles, dialogue balloons, handwritten polkadot and lines. On the other hand, the layout of western magazines are usually more art oriented, utilizing shapes and vibrant colours. Japanese magazines present readers a cute and lively approach, while western magazines are more cool and stylish.

#3 Exclusive Models (Reader Models)

Exclusive models for Jelly- The Jeliga (Jelly Girls)

Unlike the mainstream magazines that we can usually observe in the western countries, magazines in Japan usually own their own exclusive models. These girls can be said as the face/icon of the magazine. They appear in the magazines continuously for every month. Perhaps using the same models can increase affinity between the models and readers? Besides, each magazine also has a community of reader models ( Dokusha-Moderu), readers that constantly appear and being featured in the magazines.

Reader models (Dokusha Moderu) that usually appears at the back pages of the magazine. They appears randomly depending on the features and content. This reader models community can be see as a linking bridge between the readers and exclusive models.

#4  Invention of New Creative Words
NewWords
Do you understand the meaning of “Onza Mayuge”?( I don’t know either ! Lol)
Flip through the Japanese Magazines, you will find loads of new words that you do not understand even if you look up a dictionary. Japanese writers are very fond of creating new trendy words to attract readers, they modify and invent funny and creative words to present their trends. If you are a Japanese language learner, do enjoy discovering new trendy Japanese fashion words !!

#5 Amazing Free Gifts
FreeGift

Japanese magazines always give out fantastic, worthy items that are always above the prize of the magazine. These pouches are free gifts that I have collected from other Japanese magazines. Sometimes they will give out tank tops from from well known apparel stores. Jelly of January gives out a set of nail polish set from Emoda that you can’t even get them it stores! Worthwhile isn’t it??

To wrap things up, Japanese magazines are very practical and comprehensive, just like a set meal with everything in it , while western mainstream magazines are the after-meal well designed dessert to enrich your fashion senses! Both are amazing and different and their way and the best is to own them all !! Hope this post can help you find out your best fashion bible !!
